Because my crew needed to eat. So I spent a lot of time trying to get them to the chow hall before it closed. Then you throw in an ambulance run that would take 2 corpsmen away from the ER and sometime a doctor. It was a constant adventure. I had worked ER’s, OR’s and doctor offices prior to the Navy. So I knew what it could be like. But in all the time I worked in the medical field I never once played a card game. If it was quiet I would give in-service training. Or write evals on my crew that had to be done monthly. I’ve worked with nurses I would have walk through fire for. We were all tired but our mission was always the patients come first.
The last time I was hospitalized, my nurses were working like 14 hours a day; 3 days a week. There were never enough nurses to patient population. Some days nurses literally ran from patient to patient. Many times my understaffed unit lost a nurse who was transferred to a floor with greater need for staff. Nurse strong aint nobody got time to play cards shirt These professionals work hard. Pay them more. Protect their human rights. Treat them like people. remember when we’re sick, we generally become more high maintenance. Nurses do take the time to make us feel the-assured and comfortable even when we whine. My last hospital stay it was the nurses who got me through, kept me calm, medicated, and fed, all while maintaining an attitude that made me feel I was someone, not just a condition.. If this Senator needs hospital care I hope her call button breaks.
