all she had to do was give the cat a little tap on the back and tell it to move… No towel needed, just need to quit reaching for the phone the way she was .. sudden quick movements are encouraging the cat to bat at her hand….that’s how cats play A parent’s main job is to foster the development of their child through modelling behaviours to the child. The child learns by copying the behaviour of the parent, which might at first not make any sense to the child but which the child will reliably reproduce as long as the parent is consistent. At a later stage, the child will make sense of the behaviour and understand why it is the better option, but that takes time and practice. Children don’t need to understand everything like us adults, they don’t have that capacity. You don’t explain to a five year old why they should not follow a stranger who offers candy. Are you following?
This mother is modelling behaviour for her child. She shows her child that 1) not getting the toy phone from the cat is not the end of the world and not worth throwing a tantrum over WITHOUT making the child feel bad about throwing a tantrum (very important), 2) that there are different options to solve a situation, Yes i am a real norwegian wiking if you touch my coffee i will drink it from your skul mug that a cat being “mean” can also be fun in a certain light, 4) that the cat is not dangerous, and 5) that it is perfectly possible to keep your cool in an adverse situation. If you watch closely, you will see that the mother validates the way her daughter feels, doesn’t minimize the situation, gives her daughter attention and doesn’t scold her daughter for crying. As far as I am concerned, not only does this mother do nothing wrong, she handles the situation as adequately as it can be handled. That cat is part of that family the same as Ella is. The little princess also needs to learn respect for her family.
