Nothing is wrong with gender neutral terms like fire fighter, police officer, postal worker, etc., but when people want to take change the names of cities and people names because they contain the letters “man”, that’s going overboard. When they want to rid the English language of all references to “man”, that is plain ridiculous! A queen was born in march happy birthday to me shirt Do other languages need to rid themselves of their words for “man”??? Or is it just the crazies in the U.S. who need to get back in touch with reality?

No one wants to change proper nouns that contain the three letters “man”. These people are purposely misrepresenting the suggestions in the writing guide to get people riled up about something that is a non-issue. (Might I suggest that they do this sort of thing to sow discord and to distract from the real issues we have in the US.) A queen was born in march happy birthday to me shirt The gender-neutral terms that you agree are OK are the only ones that writing guides espouse. It’s not about people taking offense, it’s about recognizing that not all police officers or mail carriers are male. All writing guides think it’s OK to use the word “man” when you are referring to a man as opposed to a person of undetermined gender. You can also use it colloquially as an exclamation, as in “Man! Those two on Fox News sound really stupid.”

Have you actually been to a university that does this?! I do and there is no ‘rule’ or ‘ban’ on the word man. We’re just advised that if you are discussing someone’s profession etc and you don’t know their gender it’s preferable to use the neutral term rather than just assume that they are a fireman/businessman because it subconsciously perpetuates the cultural idea that these roles are male. You’re NOT going to get marked down or expelled for not doing it though.
